Need for Speed: The Run is the Catalyst for Future Need for Speed Stories
The story forging future Need for Speeds
With improvements in video game graphics, developers broadened their narratives. Instead of scrolling text stories, developers can build the worlds they envisioned. Such is the case with EA Black Box’s 2011 title, Need for Speed: The Run.
Black Box created their rendition of Need for Speed with the largest open world and expansive narrative than any Need for Speed prior. Past Need for Speed titles had enriching stories, but Need for Speed: The Run is the first to expand on world-building. Black Box wanted to capitalize on the campaign and put its creativity to the test.
Need for Speed: The Run is the first mainline title that used the Frostbite 2 Engine. According to The Run’s executive producer, Jason DeLong, the Black Box team envisioned The Run with a “Hollywood experience and more cinematic feel.” The Frostbite 2 engine as well broadens The Run with a “very deep racing mechanic of handling physics into the game,” Jason DeLong confirms.
