College Recap Two or How College Showed Who I Am

I have a lot of work to do

Last year, I said I’d head to college. I kept to that promise, and it’s going well. Given my success on Medium, I’m working towards a digital journalism degree. I want to turn journalism into a career. To make it more than a hobby where I make money on the side.

In my second semester at college, I can say with confidence. I chose the right major. The journalism professors admired my writing. It didn’t surprise me, but it brightened my day when the head of the college newspaper liked my writing and said to join the newspaper.

“I hope you join. You’re a great writer,” he said.

I did precisely that. I applied for a contributor position and got it. Admittedly, I was nervous about applying and doing the interview. My communication skills are god awful.

And that’s what college showed me.

My communication skills need work. I can’t sound gagged and breathless if I want to be a reporter. I understand I was home for two years, and it regressed my speech. But it’s time to take action and improve my vocabulary.

I know it won’t be easy. I have social anxiety, and it hasn’t improved. Luckily, I returned to therapy to fight that demon rotting my mind.

The next semester is starting on Monday. I’m ready for whatever comes my way. The newspaper gig is an excellent experience — it’ll look good on my resume. I hope to make friends (a girlfriend?) in the college newspaper and my classes.

Maybe I’ll find that golden idea?

Only time will tell.
