From the moment I sat my lanky behind in the theater room to watch the sequel to the ‘90s cult classic, Candyman, it didn’t prepare me for the ride I’ll endure. When the lights dimmed, showing the beginning logos, backwards meant only one thing; the film is disturbing. Yes, films of Candyman’s caliber have an edge to them; it’s how they get their point across. It’s apparent Candyman is a commentary on racial injustice. Candyman amalgamates murders of individuals of color. People like Candyman get murdered every day because old ways remain in society. Yet, these victims don’t spring back to life and go on a murdering rampage.

Candy Man (2021) was released on August 27, 2021, and was directed by Nia DaCosta. Audiences know her for her crime thriller, Little Woods, in 2019. After Candyman, she will direct an MCU film, The Marvels, in 2022. The film stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as inspiring artist, Anthony McCoy who got his big break from his art-gallery director girlfriend, Brianna Cartwright, played by Teyonah Parris.
